What are asset tags?

Asset tags are used to identify equipment through the use of a unique bar-code or serial number. They are combined with an asset tracking software programme to monitor and track a variety of physical assets. They provide a foundation to speed up data entry and thus reduce any field entry errors that may occur as well as provide inventory control for companies.

There are two types of assets:

1. Fixed assets – these are infrastructure assets and can include bridges, water and sewer systems, or dams and lighting systems.

2. Movable assets – these refer to physical property, such as equipment or furniture, which are not attached to a building. It also includes business items which are commonly moved, such as scanners, computers and printers.
